2016-17 Louisiana Youth Orchestra Auditions

Please check the following audition information for the LYO ensemble you are interested in:

Louisiana Youth Orchestra: Note: String players are eligible in grades 9-college, wind and percussion players are eligible in grades 10-college.  Auditions will be held on August 27 from 9:00am – 1:00pm, and August 28 from 2:00 – 5:00pm. Both audition days will be held at the LSU Music and Dramatic Arts Building (191 Dalrymple Dr. Baton Rouge, LA 70802). Contact Music Director David Torns at (225) 400-0332 or dtorns@brso.org to schedule an audition time.  Please include your name, instrument, contact information, and a preferred audition date and time.  We will try to accommodate you as best as possible.

LYO Percussion Ensemble: Please contact LYO Percussion Instructor Kyle Cherwinski at kcherw1@lsu.edu for information about auditioning for the LYO Percussion Ensemble.

Louisiana Junior Youth Orchestra: Note: String players are eligible in grades 6-8, wind and percussion players are eligible in grades 6-9. Auditions will be held on August 27 from 9:00am – 1:00pm, and August 28 from 2:00 – 5:00pm. Louisiana Junior String Ensemble: Open rehearsals will be held on September 12 and September 19 at the LSU School of Music in room 115, from 5:45-7:00pm.  Music will be provided by the conductor, and students will have the chance to read through it prior to the audition.  Students will sign up to reserve an audition time at the open rehearsals. Auditions will be held September 24 from 9:00am – 12:00pm in room 221 at the LSU Music and Dramatic Arts Building (191 Dalrymple Dr. Baton Rouge, LA 70802).  Please email Conductor Lisa McGibney at voilalisa@yahoo.com with any questions.

Note: The audition process is only a tool that we use to place students in the appropriate ensembles according to skill level and age. The LYO is a non-competitive environment where students learn through encouragement and high musical standards.

Note: If accepted into the LYO program, there is a tuition of $200.00 for the year. Payment is due in full at the first rehearsal. Checks should be made out to LYO.

Audition Requirements for LYO Ensembles:

Louisiana Youth Orchestra: Winds and strings must prepare the following:
A prepared solo piece without accompaniment
Standard scales (major and minor), 3 octaves with key signatures up to 3 flats and three sharps. If you are not able to play 3 octaves, please prepare 2 octaves.
Sight reading

LYO Percussion Ensemble:
Snare Drum
Open stroke roll (soft to loud to soft)
Closed stroke roll (soft to loud to soft)
Timpani
Must be able to match pitch
Keyboard
Major and minor scales, 2 octaves in sixteenth notes
Identification of key signatures
Sight reading

Louisiana Junior Youth Orchestra: Winds and strings must prepare the following:
A prepared solo piece without accompaniment
A major scale: key signatures up to 2 flats and 2 sharps (C major, G major, D major, F major, B-flat major). Please prepare 2 octaves, if you are able to play 3 octaves please do.
