ABOUT THIS CONCERT:
This concert will start off some beautiful works from opera greats like Verdi, and will feature our Baton Rouge Symphony Chorus. After the intermission, we visit the fifth symphony by Shostakovich. This is a work of incredible drama and intensity, and is really a testament to the power of the human spirit when faced with adversity. Dmitri Shostakovich wrote his fifth symphony while experiencing extreme duress under the Soviet regime. And this piece is really about truth under pressure – does he cater to the forces, to the oppression, of his time, or does he remain true to his artistic voice, and to his own human spirit? It is under difficult circumstances like these that so much great art has been created in the history of humanity, and this fifth symphony by Shostakovich is no exception.
